Shadyvil's LNT and Green Plan
Before the Event
• Communicate LNT plan to all Shadyvillains prior to event. Post plan to website.
• Train team of 6 Eco Warriors to oversee waste management
• Provide information on ways to reduce waste to all Shady citizens
• Host pre-playa info session on proper recycling and composting procedures according to San Francisco's 3 bin system.
• Commit to LNT
Kitchen
• Build kitchen pre-playa
• Plan group/shared breakfast and dinner beforehand to minimize food waste
• Bring food items with limited packaging (de-package pre-playa)
• Plan to use re-usable dishes/utensils as much as possible. All other forks/plates/cups will be compostable or recyclable
Structures, Lighting, Decorations
• Plan and build shower, evapo pond and evapo fountain to guarantee no water hits the playa
• Use as many decorations and lights from previous years as possible. We know they work and can hold up to wind and dust.
• Choose only non-toxic and re-usable materials
Waste Management
• Plan route to Reno/SF transfer stations and recycling centers. Make maps/directions available to Shady dump runners.
• Reduce waste as much as possible. Plan to recycle/compost most discarded materials to divert waste from landfill.
During the Event
• Arrange camp layout for easy clean-up. Cover ground in community space to collect moop. Canvas flooring from previous years.
• Provide 3 bin system (recycle, compost, trash) with clear signage for easy waste disposal
• Any loose materials will be tied down or stowed away in clear labeled bins to keep it in place
• Will perform 1-2 camp sweeps per day to prevent moop
• Will provide proper tools for easy clean-up (rakes, gloves, contractor/bio bags, etc.)
• Return all cans to recycle camp
• discourage bottles, encourage kegs
• Will punish all Shadizens that don't comply with LNT Plan
• Clean as we go. Yes mom!
• Provide on-going waste-management education to Shadies.
• Take notes to improve next year's LNT Plan
After the Event
• Take all recyclables/compost/trash to SF or Reno transfer station
• Rake/sweep entire camp grid
• Save all structures and materials for next year
• Designate Shadies for dump/recycling runs
• Spend time helping neighbors/community clean up
• Everything packed out
• Share LNT successes and failures with community. Improve next year!
Interactivity:
Ask anyone whose ever been to BRC & they will tell you a story about a camp they stumbled on, that offered some shelter, coupled w/ a dynamic crowd, great music + lots of love & how it quickly became the impromptu experience of a lifetime. At Shadyvil, we aim to provide that experience. We initially appear as a mirage through the dusty goggles- off in the distance, but as you approach it becomes clearer and clearer- Shadyvils not only for real we are the Mecca between the mountains stashed beneath the swirling sun (and usually somewhere near a gigantic Duck, so stop squinting, it all real!), that you’ve been looking for- and didn’t even know it. Engaging our guests is how we foster a community feeling within Shadyvil.
Shadyvils community has been providing an open living room servicing the residents of BRC for 6 years. Beneath our shaded 24’ geo-dome awaits a laid back experience that allows people to absorb what they have just taken in. The interior, which evolves with each Burn, allows plenty of room, so whether you want to pop a squat, grab a seat or just plain pass out, (the current record is from 2009 - “guy who came at 2pm wed’s-immediately crashed out in gravity chair and left Thursday”- after breakfast, of course) we provide an atmosphere everyone can utilize & enjoy. There are two smaller, more private domes that are typically stumbled into by those bold and brazen enough to exit through the back entrance of the dome. The smaller domes are more secluded & decorated in style. One, usually serves as a cuddle puddle filled with warm sound vibes, soft pillows and even softer lighting. The other, is usually a surprise even to our own community as it is created by one of our resident artist as a gift to the group. This years camp frontage will be a large breathable wall that will serve as a blank canvas for artist to transform during the week. Upon entry, an immediate feeling of a typical sketchy urban side street -whose bare walls will be an offering & opportunity for artists + the artists within to express themselves in our very own shady alley.
Early in the a.m. as the rooster crows, we dust off our floors, empty out our dome and lay down our mats as we offer bikram yoga classes instructed by one of San Francisco’s leading instructors, five days in a row- followed by (shhh!! its usually a surprise) breakfast: pancakes + bacon. Once Yoga ends, the dome swiftly fills with people awaiting the shady daze. In the afternoon, we’ve had workshops like: Bartending w/ Barkeep Bill- (self explanatory) or if you just need a shot to feel better: visit Nurse Betty’s Aid Station out front. One of our claims to fame (ask any ranger-oops don’t-and yes I’m moving the bikes) is our reggae and ipa party. Is it the Reggae? Is it the IPA? Is it beer served by a guy named Meat Hands?? Free cold beer on playa rocks. Free IPA from an ICE COLD TAP is Mecca!!! As night time gently sets, our in house dj crew prepares the air with beats or if its movie night, take a break from the hectic sounds of the playa to relax at the Shadyvil Urban Safari Community Center and relax and watch a movie as we are proud to host our first community movie night.
We like to eat, but we love to feed. Our community participated last year for the first time in the feed the artist program. Last year, we fed Burninator Grid & loved the experience so much that this year we are going to feed the artists several nights. Not only did we feed the artists last year, we stole ‘em!! This year several members of Burninator Grid have joined Shadyvil as our ever growing population rises- our cooking is THAT good! In fact, each year, without plan and without fail- we feed people. Breakfast, lunch, dinner: there is always extra food & drink for the hungry and we are not happy until we find them and feed them. There is nothing that fosters community more than breaking bread (except breaking bacon.)
As much as we like to eat, we also like to greet. Last year several members volunteered as greeters. The experience was incredibly enlightening & immensely euphoric- this year we are expanding our crew of greeters & may in fact “swarm” the gate. ‘Swarm?’ You say. “Yes”, I say- a Shady Swarm! After all, an interactive community is just as interactive when they get out of the door- light up and look all around, so we Swarm. Our entire camp tours BRC once a year together + when 75 of the warmest strangers you’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting Swarm your camp- the experience is welcome + memorable. In addition to greeters, we are proud of the Ranger’s as well as EMT’s in residence- all of whom volunteer outside of Shadyvil and help to provide peace + safety to the BRC. Our community morphs each and every year, but one thing that never changes is our commitment to community as our central theme.
Physical Description:
Front Frontage: The frontage of Shadyvil will be a large wall constructed of breathable material. We will have security cameras, phone booths, street lights and pigeons adorning the wall, mimicking a urban alley. The wall will be open for redesign just like an alley. A small amount of paint will be provided but BRC residents are welcome to paint and decorate our frontage as they desire. We will ensure the playa is kept paint free using drop clothes as necessary.
Back Frontage: The backside of our camp will have frontage on the back of the block. This area will serve as the entrance to our Urban Safari Camp and Theater where we will hold movies and some events. We have been a block deep the past 2 years but this year we are working on doing a nice frontage design on both sides.
Public Structures: The front of camp will have 2 large 24' domes serving as both the pub and main gathering areas. Yoga classes and other events will take place in these larger domes as well as community dinners. The back frontage of camp will have 2 smaller 15' domes serving as a relaxing area where the BRC is welcome to take a nap and catch some rest in a comfortable atmosphere.
Front Area: We had some problems last year with bike parking. We had bike parking but our popularity clearly can not be contained in 2 bike racks this year. With this in mind we will be dedicating some more space to parking inside our camp boundaries to keep the rangers at bay. This area will also serve as our overflow for the Reggae & IPA party which invariably overflows our dome space.
Kitchen/Utilities: We have a fairly large kitchen that is kept private, however, we do serve random meals when the whim strikes. The kitchen is located near our shower and evaporation pond so we can easily move greywater without risking playa spillage. The generator will be stored near the pond, far from vehicles or structures. Generator placement may change though depending on surrounding camps and their placements.
Parking: 1 box truck, 1 big trailer, 20-25 cars, 10-15 RVs
Private Structures: We have 2 very large shaded tent camping areas. this year they will most likely be 30' x 60' each. All of our structures are playa testing so there is no huge safety concern.
RVs: RV's will be parked to block wind and sun but will still be arranged to create an open feel within camp.
